The HIV challenge to breastfeeding

This is a literature review and a denunciation of the way the international community was viewing and working with this issue. This was written BEFORE the adoption of AFASS criteria as a basis for counselling the HIV+ mother to avoid breastfeeding. It was designed to complement the two-part series Breastfeeding Review had just published by Pamela Morrison.

This abstract, based on Joel Monarrez’ work in Mexico, reports on the first ever field trial of the filter paper method of measuring ferritin using capillary blood, ideal for isolated groups like the Tarahumara.

An abstract in Spanish on anemia in Tarahumara women of reproductive age based on the set of studies Dr. Joel Monarrez did with me for his PhD. He is probably the leading expert on the nutrition of this neglected, isolated and poor indigenous group in the mountains of northern Mexico.
