This paper, part of Stefan Peterson’s PhD research, is based on probably the largest scale experience to date in providing oral iodized oil capsules to populations vulnerable to iodine deficiency while getting salt iodization up to speed. It was funded by Swedish Sida through its support to the Tanzania Food and Nutrition Centre. At its largest size, it reached virtually the entire population of some 28 districts, providing capsules about every two years, several times in some districts. This paper shows that, with such an expensive supplement with a short shelf life, a more careful and expensive supervision system more than paid for itself in reduced wastage.
