Blindness is in the eye of the beholder: response to Sloan and Solomons

Persson et al published a paper (available here) saying that in South Asia where breastfeeding continues for so long, breastfeeding cannot be ignored (as does the Helen Keller Food Frequency method to assess community risk for vitamin A deficiency). This is not a minor point, since most of the world’s vitamin A deficiency is located in those countries. Two of the scientists who had validated the method wrote a letter attacking our findings. Factors associated with the duration of breastfeeding may depend on the extent to which mothers of young children are employed

This was a commentary I was asked to write for Acta Paediatrica to accompany an article on factors influencing breastfeeding in New Zealand. It focuses on issues related to the breastfeeding rights of working women, and introduced readers to the forthcoming new ILO Convention on maternity protection of 2000.
